Shares of Malaysian palm oil producer Tanah Emas Corp dropped 7.02 per cent in afternoon trading yesterday after shareholders rejected its dividend proposal.

At a shareholders’ meeting yesterday, Tanah Emas major shareholders, who are also directors of the company, rejected a dividend payment of five sen a share, citing concerns over a weakening economic outlook and the sharp fall in crude palm oil prices.

Tanah Emas was trading at 53 sen a share by 0711 GMT.

The broader market was up 0.96 per cent.

Trading in Tanah Emas shares was halted mid-morning following the rejection.

Shareholders were of the opinion that “the company needs to conserve cash for its operations and business expansion,” it said in a filing with the stock exchange. – Reuters
