Malaysian plantations with more than 40 workers told to set up OSH committee

Plantation companies with more than 40 workers have been told to set up a committee on occupational safety and health by the end of the year.

Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director-general Datuk Dr Johari Basri said at present, only 60 per cent of the plantation companies had established such a committee.

Johari also urged companies to invest more in ensuring the safety and health of their workers.

“With the increase in commodity prices, particularly palm oil, the companies have no excuse not to spend more for their workers’ safety and health,” he said.

Johari said many plantation companies were still taking the matter lightly although they had registered with the department.
