PETALING JAYA: Kulim (M) Bhd’s oil palm plantation business in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is progressing smoothly as the island it is operating in is not affected by the current racial unrest.

A spokesman for the company said the current unrest was taking place at the main island where Kulim had no operations. The nation has some 600 islands.

“Our business is still doing well at this moment as we are not affected by the unrest. In fact, we are going ahead with our business plan in PNG,” he told StarBiz.

“We have been here for quite some time already and had helped build facilities and infrastructure for the local communities. People are familiar with us over there as we are helping to uplift their living conditions. So, there is no problem between them (local communities) and us,” he said.

He said the company would continue its investment plans as it had a vast land bank for its palm oil plantation business. It was reported recently that Kulim had a land bank of nearly 80,000ha and aimed to expand by 5,000ha a year.

Currently, Kulim’s PNG business is run by its subsidiaries, New Britain Palm Oil Ltd and Ramu Agri-Industries Ltd, supervising 35,000ha and 30,000ha of plantation respectively.
