MIRI: Greenhouse gas reduction specialist AES AgriVerde of Kuala Lumpur will invest US$100mil (RM327mil) on biodigester facilities in agricultural plantations and livestock farms in Malaysia and neighbouring countries to help reduce global warming.

AES and Sarawak-based Rimbunan Hijau Sdn Bhd recently launched Sarawak’s first Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project at Rimbunan’s oil-palm estate near Long Teru in interior Miri, where a biodigester was set up by AES to trap greenhouse biogas emitted by rotting oil-palm waste.

Following the project, AES felt it had the potential to set up more such facilities in the state as it had hundreds of thousands of hectares of oil-palm estates and animal farms.

AES country manager Mohd Nafi Mohd Zin said the company was negotiating with eight oil-palm refineries in Sarawak to set up of the biodigesters, which cost RM1mil each.

“The CDM project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emission by 25,512 tonnes annually.
